Neuschwanstein: frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions visitors actually ask, collected from our guide pages. Each answer links to the longer version where one exists.
Tickets and tours
Can you visit without a guided tour? You can walk the hill, cross the Marienbrücke and see the outer courtyards without a ticket, but the finished state rooms are only open as part of a guided tour with a timed ticket.
How long does a tour take? About thirty minutes inside. Count in the thirty- to forty-minute ascent from the ticket centre and the time for the viewpoints; plan half a day to be comfortable.
Can you buy tickets on the day? At the ticket centre, subject to availability — and in the peak months the day is often sold out. Advance timed slots are the reliable route; our ticket guide explains the fees.
On the mountain
Is photography allowed inside? Not in the state rooms. Outside — the bridge, the valley, the courtyards — photograph freely.
Is the Marienbrücke open in winter? It closes in ice and high wind; typically it runs from spring to late autumn. Check the morning status.
Can you visit with children or with limited mobility? Yes, with preparation: the ascent is steep, and the shuttle covers most of it but not the last steps. The tour pace is moderate.
Quick history
Is Neuschwanstein the Disney castle? No. Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle drew on the same romantic imagery; the buildings are different. The real story — Ludwig II, the Wartburg models, the eleven nights — is told in our history section, and the rooms themselves in inside the castle.
