How to get to Neuschwanstein
The castle sits above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen, at the very south of Bavaria. Everything below the castle — ticket centre, car parks, the trailheads — is in the village, and the final approach is always on foot, by shuttle or by horse carriage. Here is how the journey usually works.
By train
From Munich the standard route runs by train to Füssen (about two hours; regional trains, no reservation needed), then by local bus or a twenty-minute taxi ride to Hohenschwangau. From Frankfurt and Nuremberg the connections route through Augsburg. From Switzerland and Austria, the lake town of Lindau and the Allgäu line offer scenic detours. Buy a regional day ticket if you are two or more travellers — it usually beats single fares.
By car
Navigation targets “Hohenschwangau”, not the castle itself — there is no road to the gate. The drive from Munich takes roughly two hours on the A96 and B17. Four car parks in the village are signposted and metered; the main one is a short walk from the ticket centre. Electric chargers and disabled spaces sit near the entrance level. In peak season the car parks fill by late morning — another argument for a morning slot.
The last 200 metres of altitude
- On foot: the asphalt footpath climbs in 30–40 minutes through the forest; it is steep but normal footwear is fine.
- Shuttle: runs up to the viewpoint terrace above the castle, a few minutes’ walk from the gate.
- Carriage: the horse-drawn option starts below the castle and climbs a gravel path; it is a short, slow ride.
- Marienbrücke: from the castle plateau the bridge over the gorge is a few minutes further; in high season the bridge itself may queue.
Timing your arrival
Plan to reach the ticket centre, not the castle gate, 45 minutes before your tour slot if you still need to collect anything, and 20 minutes if everything is on your phone. The climb itself takes the 30–40 minutes counted above; the guide will not wait for stragglers. Buses from Füssen station are roughly hourly — check the return time too, because the last connection can be earlier than you expect.
